Reddit dominating every SERP isn't diversity in my opinion. And how can an independent, small website run by a single person compete with either reddit or a large authority site? I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. "Hidden gem" doesn't work here because if you don't have a high DA you're classified as a bad site-wide. In my opinion, Google is massively afraid of the introduction of SGE and wants to get rid of all small sites first!
There should still be other spots for smaller sites next to Reddit. But again, I agree on the problem with high DA sites getting way too much spotlight. Maybe users want big brands, but if not, I wonder if Google should tone backlinks down as a ranking factor.
I understand the intent by Google to show real Reviews, but reddit just shows up for simply everything. Outranking doctors for medical advices, financial tips from user1234 and product reviews with wrong Infos! What about all content creators who make a living out there, putting effort in their work. The conclusion is made without all the content creators out there. Welcome to a World without diversity.
I would argue Reddit brings even more diversity to the SERPs because a lot of top ranks are dominated by either high authority sites or affiliate projects. Nothing wrong with those per se, but I'm not sure Forbes is the best authority on so many queries, for example (just picking one here). I agree, though, that Google needs to be more diligent in the posts they show, and that's why I think they made that deal.
